Black and White Maui Photography Wall Art

Black and white Maui photography reveals the island in a different way. Without color, the focus shifts to light, texture, and form—from lava rock and ocean movement to cloud structure and quiet detail.

This collection features original Maui photographs carefully selected for black and white presentation, offering a timeless, minimalist view of the island.

What Makes Black and White Maui Photography Unique

In black and white, familiar Maui locations take on a different character. Coastlines become more graphic, waves feel more dynamic, and textures stand out with greater contrast.

Each image is composed and processed with monochrome in mind—not simply converted—resulting in photography that emphasizes depth, balance, and atmosphere.

This collection brings together Maui scenes where black and white feels most natural—lava coastlines, shifting ocean patterns, dramatic skies, and the sculpted ridges of the West Maui Mountains. Rather than relying on color, these photographs invite attention to light, texture, contrast, and form, revealing a quieter perspective of the island before you explore the gallery below.

A familiar piece of old Front Street, preserved in black and white.

Photographed before the August 2023 Lāhainā fire, this image captures the original Cheeseburger in Paradise at 811 Front Street, with its open-air dining room, oceanfront setting, American flag, bicycles, pedestrians and the everyday activity that once defined this part of town.

Cheeseburger in Paradise began in Lāhainā in 1989, founded by Laren Gartner and Edna Bayliff after the two Southern California picture framers visited Maui and became captivated by historic Lāhainā, its sunsets and oceanfront dining. Neither had restaurant experience when they made the move to Maui and opened the first location. The restaurant describes its original Lāhainā setting as a place where the waves could reach the building, and it quickly became a favorite with both residents and visitors.

Over its 34 years at 811 Front Street, Cheeseburger in Paradise became a substantial part of Lāhainā's commercial life. Founder Laren Gartner later told the Maui County Liquor Control Commission that the restaurant served approximately 900,000 guests, generated about $200 million in revenue, employed thousands of people over the decades and purchased from numerous Maui businesses and food suppliers.

The restaurant was destroyed during the August 8, 2023 Lāhainā fire. Its owners subsequently decided not to reopen the Lāhainā location, ending more than three decades on Front Street.

Today, this photograph takes on a different meaning. What was once an ordinary afternoon outside a busy restaurant is now a documentary record of a place, streetscape and moment in Lāhainā that no longer exists in this form.
